Architectural and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), known for designing some of the world’s tallest buildings, has partnered with energy storage company Energy Vault to develop new gravity-based storage systems.

Their first tower could reach between 300 and 1,000 meters in height, acting as a massive energy reservoir capable of storing several gigawatt-hours of electricity.

The companies believe their concept is commercially viable and are currently seeking investors.
